Grad school starts in less than a week and the panic has finally set in. It all started when I learned that my immunization records were incomplete and I almost missed registration.
Then I got my first tuition bill.
Oh my god you guys. YOU GUYS. This Ivy League education stuff is no joke. I could buy another HOUSE for this kind of cash. Or maybe retire early. Or BOTH. While riding a gold-plated chariot.
But it’s totally going to be worth it, right? RIGHT? RIGHT?!?

It’s worth it. You’re worth it!
I am soooo going to say this to myself in the mirror before I head off to Grad School Day No. 1, complete with mandatory schmoozing, just like Stuart Smalley. And you know what? It will totally make me feel better.
I agree with Deena.
What are you majoring in?
Thank you! The degree is something called “strategic communications.” Everyone looks at me funny when I say that, so I try to describe it as “the MFA of the MBAs,” which makes people look at me even funnier, so I just stop talking.
Cool.
Do you know what kind of jobs you could get with that degree? Or is it something that can be used in a lot of different careers? I’ve never heard of it before.
I’m already in the field now, so jobs similar to my own but hopefully fancier and with bigger offices.
I just decided it was time for more formal education, and it’s a good curriculum for me, I think. I do worry, though, that it’s something that people don’t necessarily recognize and therefore will have less… Cache? Fancy power? You know what I mean! It’s a little obscure.
Anyplace you apply for a job will know the term “strategic communications,” which is after all what counts, right? (Though “the MFA of the MBAs” is kinda catchy.)
PInk Gin–Plymouth + Angostura bitters–wasn’t to my liking. Neither was the Sazerac and the only thing they have in common is the bitters, so I guess I’m not an Angostura fan. The terrible ordeal of self-experimentation continues.
Pink gin! Of course I’ll have to experiment on myself now… I enjoyed a Sazerac the last time I had one, although I’m still up in the air on this whole “bitters” business.
Characters in a 1951 British movie kept ordering Pink Gin so as new gin drinkers we had to try it. But it’s back to the Bombay Sapphire Aviations for now. We actually ran through a big bottle of Luxardo and had to restock.
Locanda (on Valencia St.) has the deep fried artichokes back on the menu after a brief interruption. This is one of the most delicious things in the world. Just saying.
Have you tried the Plymouth martini yet? There is a place in Portland that refuses to make a martini with anything else – go figure.
Also! I had a very lovely gin drink here in NYC that included St. Germaine and basil. I don’t recall what kind of gin they used but it was called an “East Side.”
Locanda does one with thyme that ain’t bad and I have a nice bunch of fresh basil in the kitchen… What’s saint Germaine?
It’s a delightful elderflower liquer!
totally worth it! ummm yeah. seriously, it is worth it. the whole experience is amazing and who knows where it may lead you! good luck!!
Thank you!!
I’m trying to think of an age joke to go with “elderflower.” Nah, the hell with it, but I’ll see if I can get a taste next time we’re out.
