| An extremely generous friend of mine volunteered to make this for me. I get to behold its beauteous wonder tomorrow! (via) |
In honor of it being Friday (and the most important national holiday of the year, my birthday), today’s weekend open thread is dedicated to birthdays. In honor of Linda Richman, I’ll give you some topics to get you started:
- Do you still celebrate your birthday? Why/why not? If so, what do you do? Something tasteful, like a fancy dinner out in cocktail attire, or something ostentatious and with a lot of sugar, like me?
- What is your favorite birthday memory? Your favorite birthday present you ever got?
- What was your worst birthday ever?
- Ever had a surprise birthday party thrown for you?
- Ever had everyone you know forget your birthday?
- Do you have any birthday traditions (for you, your partner, your kids, your pets…)?
Have a lovely weekend, dearies, and thank you for reading this drivel. Y’all are the best birthday presents ever!

My favourite birthday present was when I turned 15. My sister bought me a vibrator!
That is delightful! What an unconventional and totally cool prezzie. At that age, I'm sure I would've been horribly confused, then embarrassed.
Happy b-day!
Thanks John! Do do anything special for your birthday these days? Like make one o' your cakes?
Happy Birthday, Sarah! It's totally cute that you're excited about it! Love it.
I'm reasonably nonchalant regarding my birthday; sometimes also oscillating between hoping no one will remember and I can spend the day in peace and hoping that someone loves me enough to organise something really cool in my honour. I hope that my best birthday is still to come, as the only one that stands out (going ice skating with my school friends for my 10th) was, if I recall correctly, quite stressful…I always worry about how good a time other people are having and forget to have a good time myself. :/What are you up to for yours today?
Happy birthday! I hope we all get to see a photo of the cake. It looks so cool.
Sometimes we go out to dinner on or around the day, but it doesn't matter much to me one way or the other. Of the decade markers so far, 30 was a breeze, 40 was utterly terrible, 50 didn't seem to matter; I was worried 60 would be a bad one, but in the event it didn't seem to make a difference. 70 next year–we'll see how I handle it.
I've had pretty good luck with my birthdays, but the worst was a few years ago when my boss had me spend five hours at the DMV to get a stolen license plate replaced. Bleh.
I can't drum up the interest in myself to answer these questions.Anyway, happy birthday!
Jen – photos are here and here! A very generous friend of mind created the cake, with an even-better-than-the-original twist – pink and kelly green checkerboard! ZOMG awesomeness. ^_^John – I keep waiting for me to not want to make a big deal out of my birthday, we'll see what 30 brings.monsterzero – that is way too much time to spend at the DMV, especially on your birthday! I hope you at least got to take a nap, or learn how to ride a motorcycle or something.Hattie – but, but, inquiring minds want to know!
I don't mean to sound all blasé–there are dates I do mark, just not b-days particularly. In fact today is exactly eight years since I found out I had lung cancer, and as usual I phoned the doc who made the original diagnosis (she's over in Marin now so I go to another doc here in SF) to say Hi, I'm still here, and to thank her again for being incredibly sympathetic and no-bullshit when she talked with me and Peg that day; the first thing she said was "Get used to waiting, and she was right.
